How is our lab testing different?

Lab work is lab work, right? Well, not necessarily! When it comes to working with a holistic specialist, the difference between the labs we commonly order may be different from those you've gone over with your doctors in the past. How? In two main ways:

1. How we're looking at them. At Golden Root Wellness, we're not just looking to see if your lab numbers fall into the "normal" ranges. We're looking to see if your numbers are optimal for YOU and where you are in life, how they connect to your current and future health, and how your results may be part of a bigger picture!

2. A Focus on utilizing the latest research-based testing to uncovering underlying illness. There's nothing wrong with basic blood work (it's the best first step when it comes to seeing what's going on in your body!) but sometimes it can't give us all the information we need to get to your diagnosis or put together the best treatment plan for you. At Golden Root Wellness, we want to heal you at your root cause, not just treat symptoms! Because of this, we're constantly utilizing new, cutting-edge lab tests aimed to help decipher what the root causes are behind your specific aches and pains.

As the detectives of the medical world, Naturopathic and Functional Medicine look at things other medical disciples may not, and in a different way. When your basic labs are saying "everything is a-okay!" but your symptoms are shouting that something is wrong, we know that might mean what we really need to do is to look in other places!

All of our lab tests are evidence-based and backed by leaders in the field of medical testing, and are chosen based on your individual health picture, symptoms, history, and, yes, budget!

Some of our favorite not-so-common tests:

DUTCH Comprehensive Hormone testing

When it comes to hormones, bloodwork doesn't always tell you the whole picture, and can commonly appear in "normal" ranges. This leaves patients with difficult periods, PMS, weight gain, mood swings, libido issues and more without any idea of why they're feeling the way they do, and no plan of action for healing. We trust DUTCH for taking the closest look possible at your hormones, how your body is breaking them down, and how this may be affecting your health. For example, your estrogen levels may be "normal," but if your body is having trouble breaking these molecules down and transporting them out, they may be hanging around and causing problems! These tests allow us to look at:

  • Your sex hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA

  • Your stress hormones cortisol and cortisone

  • How your body is breaking down and metabolizing these hormones, and if their metabolites are being properly detoxed out of your body

  • Organic acids, which allow us to look at things like serotonin and dopamine

  • Melatonin

  • How your cycle is mapping out throughout the month

Who benefit from these tests: patients suffering from difficult or absent periods, PMS, mood swings, fatigue, menopausal or perimenopausal symptoms, weight gain, libido issues, acne.

Genova Comprehensive Stool Analysis

When it comes to getting to the bottom of GI complaints, the typical stool analysis doesn't usually cut it! The tests we trust can explore a number of different factors, customizable to each patient's needs, including:

  • Markers of digestion and absorption, including how well your pancreas is functioning, and how well your body is breaking down things like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

  • Markers of inflammation and immunology, such as Calprotectin, which can help diagnose between different bowel disorders, and Eosinophil Protein X, which can help determine if inflammation is being driven by an allergic response.

  • Your gut microbiome, how well it's doing its job, a detailed look at who your bacteria are, what may have set up camp in your gut that is causing trouble, and what natural and pharmaceutical agents might be best for helping you rebalance.

  • Parasitology, to determine if any parasites may be present, as well as the ability to test for E. Coli, H. Pylori, yeast, and markers indicating intestinal hyperpermeability aka "leaky gut."

Who benefits from these tests: patients suffering from gastrointestinal complaints such as indigestion, bloating, gas, abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, and constipation.

IGenex Lyme Testing

Typical testing for Lyme diseases, such as the Western Blot test and the ELISA test has a reported sensitivity of only 57.6%, leaving many patients with inconclusive or false results despite debilitating or otherwise unexplained symptoms. IGenex ImmunoBlot testing offers a reported sensitivity of greater than 93%*, allowing patients a clearer answer of their health state and a better direction for treatment. As tick-borne diseases, when left untreated, can worsen and progress to more severe disease, we're committed to providing patients access to the most sensitive testing options available.

Who benefits from these tests: patients who suspect they are suffering from Lyme disease or coinfection, or individuals who are exhibiting symptoms and complaints consistent with symptoms of Lyme disease of coinfections despite previous inconclusive or negative ELISA or Western Blot testing.

Nutrient Evaluation Tests

Advanced nutrient evaluation tests allow us to take a personalized look at what nutritional deficiencies may be at the root of your health issues. These tests allow us to determine:

  • overall nutritional status

  • antioxidant need

  • vitamin and mineral need

  • essential fatty acid need

  • amino acid need

  • digestive support

  • optional specific gene testing, such as MTHFR, COMT, and APOE

Utilization of tests like this can be incredibly useful in aiding the recovering of complicated chronic illnesses.

Who benefits from these tests: patients with mood disorders, fatigue, digestive issues, inflammatory conditions and chronic pain issues, those at cardiovascular risk, those with weight issues, and those looking to optimize their general health or fitness.

And more, including mold and other environmental exposure, cardiovascular panels, & thyroid panels.
